Nigerians must resist using military to shift polls – JAF

One of Nigeria’s frontline and vociferous civil societies group, the Joint Action Front, JAF, yesterday, called on the Federal Government, Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, and the security operatives never to shift the forthcoming polls, billed for March 28 and April 11, urging the Nigerian electorate to resist whatever reasons that may be given for a further shift.

The civil societies group which made this call, at a State of the Nation press conference in Lagos, tagged: “The Imperative of a Broad Movement for a Political Alternative,” stated that the masses must oppose all manner of electoral manipulations and postponement under whatever guise, including the ongoing rumour of a military coup or imposition of an interim national government to scuttle the election.
JAF Chairperson, Dr. Oladipo Fashina, who was flanked by JAF Secretary, Comrade Abiodun Aremu; JAF Deputy Chair, Achike Chude and Chairman, Academic Staff of Universities, University of Lagos, UNILAG, Dr. Laja Odukoya said: “The General elections of February 14 and 28 were postponed and despite the new dates of March 28 and April 11, there are worrisome signals of the conspiracy to again postpone the election.
The use of military to force the postponement of the elections is dangerous and threatens even the new dates. Who, except the military itself, determines whether or not there is enough security?
