The Police in Gombe State yesterday confirmed the death of a suicide bomber in a failed attempt to kill worshipers at a mosque on Tuesday evening during Magrib prayers in Kasuwan Mata area of Gombe Metropolis.

When the area was visited, the remains of the suicide bomber were still burning as at 10am.

However, sources, including the Red Cross officials in Gombe, said two other persons were killed while about 20 persons sustained injuries during the failed bomb attack.
The Gombe Police Command spokesman, DSP Fwaje Atajiri, who confirmed the incident, told newsmen that the suicide bomber was on an explosives-laden motorcycle, heading towards the mosque, but the explosives went off before he could reach his target.
According to him, the suicide bomber was the only casualty as at the time he spoke with journalists.
He said: “The incident happened around Kasuwan Mata area of Gombe at about 7pm. He was targeting a mosque but the explosives went off before he could reach his target.”
The police spokesman said hoodlums wanted to take advantage of the situation to loot people’s property but were contained by the police and other security men around the area.
He, therefore, warned restive youths to desist from such acts, as the command was ready to deal decisively with anyone involved.
His words: “The Gombe State Police Command under the leadership of CP Abdullahi Kudu Nma will not tolerate such acts from the public. Parents are advised to keep a close watch on their children and wards, as the law will descend heavily on anyone caught causing trouble or trying to loot, as breaking of shops is a criminal offence.”
Also, he called on the general public to be vigilant and report suspicious persons or groups to security agents.
Kasuwan Mata is about 300 metres from the spot where a suicide bomber also died before he could reach a targeted Church in Tudun Wada area on January 1, this year.
